Getting Started

Step 2 of 5

5 min read

Create your first workspace

Understand how Lanternfish organizes your AI agents, then set up your first project and workspace.

What you'll learn

  • The Organization → Project → Agent hierarchy
  • How workspaces scope your traces and briefings
  • How to create and configure your first project

1. Understand the hierarchy

Lanternfish uses a three-level structure to organize your AI agents. Understanding this helps you decide how to scope your projects.

Organization

Billing unit

Your company or team. Members, billing, and settings live here.

Project

Data boundary

A deployment or environment. Traces, briefings, and API keys are scoped here.

Agent

Code-level

Your actual AI agents. Identified by the name you pass in traces.

Pro tip: Most teams create one project per deployment environment (production, staging, local). Agents are created automatically when you send your first trace with a new name.

2. Create your first project

After signing up, onboarding asks for your organization's name and creates your first project and API key. To add another project later, open your organization and click Create new project.

Project configuration

Name

production-agents

Use a clear, descriptive name. Visible to all team members.

Description

Customer-facing production environment for booking agents

3. Configure project settings

Navigate to Settings → General to fine-tune your project behavior.

Default landing page

Choose whether Briefing or Investigations opens first

Data retention

Runs are kept for 14 days on Free, 90 on Pro and 365 on Team

Destructive confirmations

Require confirmation before archive or delete actions

API Keys

Generate keys in Settings → API Keys to authenticate the SDK

4. Verify your setup

Your project is ready when you see:

Project appears in the sidebar Project Switcher

At least one API key exists in Settings → API Keys

You can access Briefing, Traces, and Investigations pages

Next step

Connect your first agent

Install the SDK and instrument your agent to start sending traces.
